Mu Deuteron Graduates speak...... On Returning to Campus: Brothers, I read an interesting if somewhat misleading article from Nov. 28 U S News & World Report, entitled "Say it ain't so: Frats Gone Mild" This triggered some thoughts. The article was based on Colgate University's policy to force Fraternities and sororities to sell to the University or be banned from the campus. This was due to the same problems or seemingly worse than we have experienced at Iowa. Only the DKE's have refused to comply and are suing the University. I firmly believe that University control of Fraternities is wrong, and that if we come back to Iowa, it must be with a very strong and tough moral code, which I know the trustees tried to put in place. The liberal bias in University Administrations today, and as stated in the article "Social Engineering", will not provide the type of independent atmosphere for young men and women that we experienced in our undergraduate days. If we can't run our houses as they should be run, eliminating the "Animal House behavior", then best we get out of the business, but do not let the Universities run the Greek houses. A saddened Grad... - Bill Swaim, Class of '50 On Chapter Closure: I was sorry to hear about the closure of the Mu Deuteron chapter. Since leaving Iowa, I have met several FIJI's out east and nationally with whom I've discussed the recent events. All of them, and my brother, who was a Delt at Iowa and whose chapter was closed due to certain indiscretions, agree that college age students plus social fraternities plus the legal drinking age are at best irreconcilable differences, and the prohibition of alcohol in fraternities of otherwise good standing precludes the downfall of the social fratrnity as most understand it. That having been said, there is a mutual agreement among most that I speak with on this issue that there must be rules. That Mu Deuteron was caught on the wrong side of this issue is unfortunate. - Michael Campbell, Class of '86 I'm very sorry to hear about the closure of our great house. I will never forget the great times I had and all the great friends/ brothers from the FIJI house. To anyone reading this, I wish you all the very best in your lives. Perge. - Ryan O'Brien, Class of '98 Hang on to the property. We need it to get started in about five years. I have watched other schools, such as U.C.L.A. sell their property and now they can't afford to get another house. - Dr. Scott Mighell, Class of '43 Sorry to hear that our Mu Deuteron chapter has crashed, burned, and died. Those who have gone before ....lament the loss of a great fraternity. - John Haub, Class of '70 I am shocked to learn that Mu Du is gone. What happens now? Is this the end? Are other fraternities at Iowa going through the same thing? Also, I just pledged money in the last year. Do I get this refunded? Sad day for FIJI's. - Christopher B. Coppola, Class of '96 What a slap in the face for all of us who determined long ago that Fiji Iowa would only exist in excellence. Again, let me know if there is anything I can do to help. - Stace Hilbrant, Class of '80 For those of us have supported the house and the chapter over the years this is difficult to accept. I can not believe that this has happened to MY chapter. It feels as a death in my family and I am mad, disappointed and ashamed at the situation. There is nothing more I can say!!! - Perry Hansen Sorry to hear the unfortunate news. My wife's sorority -- which has a chapter at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, has also been placed on probatation for the same reasons. Somehow, we fraternity men and women have to learn to celebrate responsibily and when we do, not in our fraternity houses. Hopefully Mu Deutron will be able to rise again. - Carl Kay Perge! |
